The Gold Rush Years: California, 1849 and Colorado, 1859: Daniel C. Oakes, the first documented Colorado hoaxer, wrote a 1859 guide book purporting to provide the speediest route to a Pikes Peak fortune. But he also was Legislator, Indian Agent and Surveyor.
